The website I chose was the library website on public surveillance and whether it is effective in stopping criminals.
Library: Is public surveillance effective?
CONTENT:
This webpage contains all kinds of info about surveillance including it's history, different kinds of surveillance, legal issues regarding surveillance, and the use of surveillance in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It also answers important questions on whether or not surveillance is an effective crime prevention tool.
PURPOSE:
I believe that the purpose of this webpage is to raise awareness and inform people about public surveillance by telling us the legal issues and operations involved with it. I think it was made to inform people about surveillance around the world and what is being done with the surveillance and how they are constantly changing it. The website answers a lot of questions that people may have in regards to surveillance as well.
FORM:
In general, the way that the website is represented is not very appealing. It basicly looks like a wall of text that may be a turn off at first. Other than very few pictures and a few changes in colour, the website is very bland. It is, however, well organized and set up with a table of contents and headings for each topic which are easy to find and that let you know what you are reading. Regarding the conventions, it contains various charts and graphs that help us see a little easier what the website is trying to say. Various graphs show us the use of surveillance in certain places and whether it seems to be effective. It contains various hyperlinks that will take you to different parts of the page which is very convenient and also contains a hefty amount of text. The design techniques do raise it's appeal, but not by much. There are multiple headers on the page as well as bolded text to catch the reader's eye. The layout of the website is also very good as well, although very bland.
AUDIENCE:
Given what I have noted about the Content, Purpose, and Form of the website, I would say that the main audience of the website would probably be people who are genuinely interested in surveillance and want to learn about it. It wouldn't attract people who are looking to be dazzled or just given the facts straight because it is very bland and unappealing to the eye. It appeals more to people who are very interested in the topic because of the fact that it contains a lot of information about surveillance and answers most questions that someone would have regarding the topic.
